How using Liferay Digital Experience Platform
(DXP) significantly reduces the effort required to develop an
enterprise web application, particularly for features like
database-driven interfaces, API integration, bulk upload/download, and
enterprise-grade functionality? The reduction in effort stems from
Liferay’s prebuilt components, drag-and-drop tools, and automation
capabilities, which streamline development, configuration, and
deployment. Below, I’ll quantify the effort reduction in terms of
    development time, resource
  requirements, and overall project effort,
tailored to the Indian market context as of April 2025, and grounded
in the specifics of enterprise application development.

Key Factors Driving Effort Reduction with Liferay DXP

Liferay DXP simplifies development through its low-code and CMS
capabilities, impacting various stages of application development:

     Prebuilt Components and Templates:

Liferay offers over 60
          portlets, 20+ themes, and reusable
fragments for UI/UX, reducing frontend design and coding
      effort.

Features like role-based access control, audit
logging, and personalization are built-in, eliminating custom
        development for common enterprise requirements.

     Low-Code Tools:

App Builder: Enables non-technical users to
        create database-driven applications with drag-and-drop
interfaces for forms, tables, and fields.

Forms Builder: Simplifies form creation with
prebuilt input types and validation, reducing frontend and
        backend logic coding.

         Workflow
        Designer: Automates business processes (e.g.,
approvals, notifications), cutting down on custom
        workflow logic.

     API and
    Integration:

Liferay’s Headless
        Delivery provides out-of-the-box REST and
GraphQL APIs, reducing API development time.

Prebuilt integrations with systems like Salesforce,
SAP, and Dynamics 365 minimize middleware
      development.

     Bulk
    Upload/Download:

Liferay’s document
library and batch processing APIs handle file uploads,
parsing (e.g., CSV, Excel), and exports, reducing custom coding
        for bulk operations.

      Scalability and Security:

Built-in
features like clustering, caching, and government-grade
encryption reduce effort for performance tuning and compliance
        (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA).

     CMS
    Capabilities:

Liferay’s content
management tools simplify dynamic content creation and
management, reducing effort for content-heavy applications
        (e.g., portals, intranets).

      Development Ecosystem:

Liferay’s
Java-based architecture and tools like Liferay Dev
Studio streamline backend development for developers
        familiar with Java or OSGi.

Community and enterprise
support (via Liferay EE) reduce troubleshooting time.

Quantifying Effort Reduction

Effort reduction can be measured in hours saved,
    percentage of development time, and
    resource allocation. The following analysis
compares traditional development (e.g., using Java Spring Boot, React,
or similar frameworks) with Liferay DXP for an enterprise application
with database tables, APIs, bulk upload/download, and enterprise features.

1. Development Time per Field (Database Table)

The time to develop a single database field (including schema
design, backend logic, frontend, APIs, and bulk features) differs significantly:

     Traditional Development:

Simple field: 5–10 hours.

Complex field: 10–20 hours.

Bulk upload/download: 2–5
hours per field or 10–20 hours per table.

Average per field: ~7–15
hours (assuming a mix of simple and complex
      fields).

     Liferay
    DXP:

Simple field: 3–7
hours (using App Builder, Forms Builder).

Complex field: 7–14 hours (leveraging
        prebuilt components and automation).

Bulk
          upload/download: 1–3 hours per field or 5–10
hours per table (using document library and batch APIs).

Average per field: ~5–10 hours.

   Time Reduction per Field:

Simple field: 2–3 hours saved (20–40%
  reduction).

Complex field: 3–6 hours
    saved (25–30% reduction).

Bulk
features: 1–2 hours saved per field or 5–10 hours
per table (50–60% reduction due to prebuilt batch processing).

     Average: ~30–40%
reduction in development time per field (~2–5 hours
  saved).

2. Overall Application Development Stages

Effort reduction varies across development phases. Below is a
breakdown of key phases for an enterprise application with ~10 tables,
each with 10 fields (100 fields total), APIs, and bulk upload/download:

     Database Schema Design:

         Traditional: 50–100 hours (0.5–1
hour/field for simple, 1–2 hours for complex).

         Liferay: 30–70 hours (0.3–0.7
hours for simple, 0.7–1.5 hours for complex, using App
      Builder).

        Reduction: 30–40% (20–30 hours
      saved).

     Backend
    Development:

        Traditional: 150–300 hours (1.5–3 hours/field
for logic, validation, and bulk processing).

        Liferay: 80–180 hours (0.5–2 hours/field,
leveraging workflow automation and document library).

        Reduction: 40–50% (70–120
        hours saved).

     Frontend
    Development:

        Traditional: 100–200 hours (1–3 hours/field for
        forms, displays, and bulk UI).

        Liferay: 50–120 hours (0.5–2 hours/field, using
        Forms Builder and portlets).

        Reduction: 40–50% (50–80 hours
      saved).

     API
    Development:

        Traditional: 100–200 hours (1–2 hours/field for
CRUD, 2–4 hours for bulk APIs).

        Liferay: 50–120 hours (0.5–1.5 hours/field for
CRUD, 1–2 hours for bulk, using Headless Delivery).

        Reduction: 40–50% (50–80 hours
      saved).

     Testing and
    Optimization:

        Traditional: 100–200 hours (1–2 hours/field for
        unit, integration, and performance testing).

        Liferay: 60–120 hours (0.5–1.5 hours/field,
with built-in testing tools and pre-optimized components).

        Reduction: 30–40% (40–80 hours
      saved).

     Enterprise Features
      (Security, Compliance, Audit Logging):

        Traditional: 100–200 hours (1–2 hours/field for
        encryption, access control, logging).

        Liferay: 50–100 hours (0.5–1 hour/field,
        leveraging built-in security and logging).

        Reduction: 50–60% (50–100
        hours saved).

   Total Effort for 100 Fields:

     Traditional: 600–1,200
    hours (~6–12 hours/field average).

      Liferay: 360–710 hours (~3.6–7.1
    hours/field average).

      Reduction: 30–40%
    overall (240–490 hours saved).

3. Other Effort Reductions

     Training and Onboarding:

         Traditional: Developers need
extensive training in frameworks (e.g., Spring, React),
        ~20–40 hours per developer.

Liferay: Low-code tools and Dev Studio reduce
training to ~10–20 hours, with non-technical users able to
configure basic features (e.g., forms, workflows).

        Reduction: 50% in training
      time.

     Maintenance:

         Traditional: Ongoing
maintenance (e.g., updates, bug fixes) requires ~15–20%
of development effort annually (90–240 hours/year for a
        600–1,200-hour project).

Liferay: Managed updates in Liferay EE and
prebuilt components reduce maintenance to ~10–15% (36–106
      hours/year).

        Reduction: 25–50% in
        maintenance effort.

      Non-Technical User Involvement:

Liferay’s low-code interface allows business users to
configure fields, forms, and workflows, reducing developer
        dependency by 20–30% for configuration
      tasks.

Example: A business analyst can create a form in
~1–2 hours using Forms Builder, vs. 5–10 hours for a developer
        in traditional coding.

Overall Effort Reduction

     Development Time: 30–40%
    reduction (~240–490 hours saved for a 100-field
application), driven by low-code tools, prebuilt components, and
  automation.

     Total Project
    Effort (including training, maintenance, and
    non-technical contributions): 35–45% reduction,
as Liferay simplifies onboarding, maintenance, and business user
  involvement.

     Resource Requirements:

         Traditional: Requires a
        larger team (e.g., 3–5 developers, 1–2 designers, 1
DevOps) with specialized skills in multiple
      frameworks.

         Liferay: Smaller
team (e.g., 2–3 developers, 1 business analyst) due to
        low-code configuration and reusable components.
Non-technical users can handle ~20–30% of configuration
      tasks.

          Reduction: 20–30% fewer developer
hours and 1–2 fewer specialized roles.

Industry Benchmarks

     Gartner: Low-code platforms like
    Liferay reduce application development time
    by 50–70% for business processes
    and 30–50% for enterprise applications,
aligning with the 30–40% estimate here.

      Liferay Case Studies: Enterprises
report 40–60% faster delivery for portals and
intranets using Liferay DXP vs. traditional development (e.g.,
    Cisco’s intranet overhaul).

Final Answer

Using Liferay DXP reduces the effort to develop
an enterprise web application by 30–40% in
development time (~240–490 hours saved for a 100-field application),
driven by low-code tools (App Builder, Forms Builder), prebuilt
components (portlets, APIs), and automation (workflows, batch
processing). Including training, maintenance, and non-technical user
contributions, overall project effort is reduced
by 35–45%, with 20–30% fewer developer
hours and smaller teams (e.g., 2–3 developers vs. 3–5).

The Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act, along with its
draft rules released in January 2025, establishes a framework for
managing personal data responsibly in India. To ensure compliance,
organizations must adopt specific practices and processes.

Below is a comprehensive guide:

1. Understanding the DPDP Act and Draft Rules

       Familiarization: Study the
DPDP Act and the draft rules thoroughly to understand
      definitions, obligations, and compliance requirements.

       Roles
      Identification: Determine your organization's
role(s) as a Data Fiduciary, Data Processor, or Consent
Manager as defined in the Act.

2. Data Mapping and Classification

       Data Audit: Conduct a
comprehensive audit to identify and categorize personal data
      collected, processed, and stored.

Data Flow Mapping: Map data flows within the
organization and with third-party vendors to understand processing
    activities.

3. Consent Management

       Clear Notices: Provide
standalone notices to individuals (Data Principals)
    detailing:

Types of personal data
        collected.

Purpose of data
        processing.

Goods, services,
          or uses enabled by processing.

Methods for withdrawing consent and lodging complaints.

       Explicit
Consent: Obtain explicit, informed consent from
      individuals before processing their data.

Consent Withdrawal: Ensure mechanisms are in
place for individuals to easily withdraw consent.

4. Data Minimization and Retention

       Purpose Limitation: Collect
and process only data necessary for specified purposes.

       Retention Policies: Implement
data retention policies to delete personal data after it is
no longer required for the purpose of processing, unless
      retention is mandated by law.

5. Data Localization

       Compliance
Assessment: Evaluate data storage practices to
ensure compliance with localization requirements, if
    applicable.

       Sensitive Data
Storage: Store sensitive personal data within India
      when mandated.

6. Security Safeguards

       Implement Measures: Adopt
      reasonable security measures, including:

Encryption.

Access controls.

Monitoring for unauthorized access.

Regular data backups.

       Vendor Compliance: Ensure data
processors adhere to security requirements through
      contractual agreements.

7. Data Breach Notification

       Timely Reporting: Notify the
Data Protection Board (DP Board) within 72 hours of
      detecting a personal data breach.

        Inform Individuals: Promptly inform affected
individuals about the breach, its impact, and mitigation
    measures.

8. Grievance Redressal Mechanism

       Appoint Grievance
Officer: Designate a Grievance Officer to address
      complaints from Data Principals.

        Accessible Process: Publish grievance redressal
mechanisms on your platform, ensuring they are user-friendly.

9. Rights of Data Principals

       Facilitate Rights: Enable
individuals to exercise their rights, including:

Accessing their personal data.

Correcting inaccuracies.

Deleting personal data upon request, subject to
          legal and operational considerations.

       Digital
Nominees: Allow individuals to appoint digital
      nominees for managing their data.

10. Significant Data Fiduciaries

     Additional Obligations: If
classified as a Significant Data Fiduciary, conduct annual
Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs) and audits to
identify and mitigate risks in data processing
  activities.

11. Employee Training and Awareness

       Regular Training: Educate
employees on data protection principles and their
responsibilities under the DPDP Act and draft rules.

       Policy Updates: Keep staff
informed about changes in data protection regulations and
      internal policies.

12. Documentation and Record-Keeping

       Maintain Records: Keep
detailed records of data processing activities,
    including:

Categories of personal
          data collected.

Purposes of
        processing.

Third parties with
          whom data is shared.

        Compliance Documentation: Document compliance
      measures and periodic assessments.

13. Engaging Legal Expertise

       Consult Professionals: Seek
legal advice to interpret complex provisions of the DPDP Act
      and draft rules.

       Stay
Updated: Monitor for amendments and additional
      guidelines issued by the government.

14. Public Awareness and Communication

       Transparency: Communicate
your data protection practices to users through
updated privacy policies and clear explanations of
      data usage.

       Awareness
      Campaigns: Participate in or initiate
campaigns to educate users about their rights and your data
      handling practices.

By implementing these guidelines, organizations can align with the
DPDP Act and its draft rules, ensuring robust data protection,
fostering user trust, and mitigating risks associated with
non-compliance. Regularly reviewing and updating practices as the
  regulatory environment evolves is essential.

How ARAD Studio has resolved the concern with custom OSGi modules in Liferay DXP?

Before we jump to the concerns let's understand what ARAD gives you
  as output.

ARAD produces and provides you with custom OSGi modules
for extending Liferay. Developers can download the source code of
generated OSGi modules and add them in Liferay workspace of the
project using Liferay Developer's Studio. These OSGi modules are
generated for web, service and API that includes pre-implemented
services, forms, APIs, validation, bulk uploading and downloading,
one-many & many-many relationship and other features which are
commonly required to implement a complete application module.

To understand more about about ARAD Studio you may visit https://arad-studio.com

When we talk about OSGi module, general opinions point towards
the concern that OSGi modules are being discouraged by Liferay due
to drawbacks like Specialized Resources, Increased
Development Time, Higher Risk of Breaking Changes, Deployment Restrictions.

However, to be more precise before we tag these
opinions as the highest level of concern it would be worth noting
the statement by Liferay which says: “Traditionally, extending
Liferay required creating and deploying custom OSGi
modules. These modules are written in Java
and can interact with Liferay’s core services. While
this method provides a powerful and comprehensive way to
extend Liferay’s functionalities, it has notable
  drawbacks”

With the above italicized statement you
can rest assured that OSGi method is still Powerful and
    Comprehensive way to extend Liferay.

Now, as far
as above mentioned drawbacks are concerned, these drawbacks are
valid when custom modules are coded manually by developers without
following the guidelines and standards of Liferay. These concerns were
precisely the reasons that inspired us to build the tool like ARAD
Studio 8 years ago to resolve these drawbacks as below:

     Specialized Resources: OSGi modules
require developers with Liferay expertise to build them safely
and properly, which limits the pool of developer resources. But
ARAD users don’t need to bother for Liferay expertise as it
provides Low-Code mechanism to build OSGi modules without
writing a single line of code. It not only generates secure
codes for services but also generates the codes for front end UI
and their templates from a single place. Resource from
non-development background can also generate and update OSGi
modules with the help of ARAD Studio.

Increased Development Time: Since there is no
need to write java code to develop OSGi modules, it is much
faster than developing application using Liferay Object,
Collection and Client Extensions. ARAD generates all in a single
    step.

     Higher Risk of Breaking
Changes: Since ARAD generates all OSGi modules through
automation, it also migrates its modules to upgraded version of
Liferay APIs. ARAD team keeps monitoring all breaking changes
with new upgrades of Liferay and upgrades ARAD client for the
new versions. All modules generated with ARAD Studio can be
migrated to new version with the single click of Generate
    button.

     Deployment
Restrictions: ARAD Modules can be used with Liferay
PaaS and Liferay self-hosted deployment as there is no provision
of deploying custom OSGi modules in Liferay SaaS deployments.

Why should you use ARAD Studio?

You should use ARAD Studio if you are using Liferay as your
unified platform for multiple solutions. If you are not using
Liferay, you can start anytime with free trial. Benefits that you
will appreciate after using ARAD is the "Benefit of Speed"
in developing following capbilities which requires lot of time in development.

Widgets for basic data analytics for
dashboard like trend chart, calculation chart and category wise
count chart generated automatcally with every module.

In most of the applications, bulk
uploading is a common requirement but for uploading
data as Liferay Objects Liferay expertise would be required to
develop client extensions for each object. Services and UI for
bulk uploading of data for ARAD generated modules can be used
for all modules as OOTB capability.

     Mobile
app for content management is not an OOTB capability of
Liferay. With ARAD Studio you can generate mobile widgets for
all modules that you generate for web portal.

Input
Forms - ARAD generates javascript based Backbone forms
which can be reused in any other application /
platform using client side javascript. It is not possible to host
Liferay forms on other applications due to tight coupling of Liferay
    forms with Liferay APIs.

     Single Step
Development - When you use ARAD you don't need to go to
multiple places for creating Object, Collection, Client
Extensions etc. All integrated OSGi modules including mobile app
are generated from one single interface where you add a new
microservice in your application. Private pages for managing content
is also created having generated widget added to it. You

Gen AI Capability - ARAD Studio is pre-integrated
with Open AI for generating data models for your requirement. You
can modify data models after they are generated with the help of
Open AI. It saves a significant amount of time that goes in defining
fields and their input types for each data model when you do it
  manually.

Every business today is looking for ways to
digitize its operations, and Liferay DXP serves as the perfect
platform for digital process automation. By
automating and streamlining critical business workflows, companies
can speed up their decision-making processes and reduce manual
tasks, freeing up resources to focus on core business areas.

Liferay DXP's Kaleo Workflow
Engine allows businesses to automate approval processes,
task assignments, document management, and customer interactions.
These workflows eliminate bottlenecks and ensure smooth processing,
whether it's approving a customer request, handling a service
  inquiry, or managing a project.

Additionally, Liferay’s Object &
Forms features together can digitize paperwork, enabling
businesses to collect, process, and act on customer or employee
information in real-time. From HR processes like employee onboarding
to customer service tasks like handling requests or complaints,
automation helps eliminate errors and provides faster service.

   Key Benefits:

- Reduction in manual processes.

- Faster time-to-market for services and products.

- Consistent and reliable operations through automation.

2. Cost Savings through Streamlined Operations

Cost reduction is at the forefront of every business
strategy, and Liferay DXP is designed to help businesses achieve
significant savings. By consolidating your digital infrastructure onto
one platform, you can reduce the need for multiple, disparate systems
and the associated costs of maintaining them.

One of the major advantages of Liferay DXP is its
ability to integrate with existing systems, such as
CRMs, ERPs, or third-party applications. This reduces the complexity
and cost of system maintenance, as businesses can operate through a
single interface rather than juggling multiple applications. Liferay
DXP’s open-source architecture and modular approach
also mean businesses can adopt the platform without incurring high
licensing fees, making it a cost-effective solution for enterprises of
  any size.

Moreover, by automating tasks like content
publishing, customer support, and data synchronization, businesses can
reduce operational overhead. This leads to not only lower staffing
costs but also fewer errors and faster processing times.

   Key Benefits:

- Reduced IT overhead through system consolidation.

  expansion costs.

3. Enhancing the Overall Customer Experience

    consistent omnichannel experience.

Additionally, Liferay DXP’s customer
self-service portals allow businesses to empower customers
to find information, submit requests, and track orders or service
tickets independently. This not only reduces the burden on customer
support teams but also provides customers with the control and
  convenience they expect.

Furthermore, Liferay’s analytics
tools allow businesses to track and understand customer

their services, offer targeted promotions, and resolve issues before
they escalate, ultimately improving customer loyalty and satisfaction.

  and improve customer satisfaction.

- Real-time insights into customer behavior enable
  proactive service adjustments.

4. Seamless Integration and Future-Ready

In today’s rapidly evolving digital landscape,
enterprise-level companies are under increasing pressure to deliver
software solutions faster, adapt to market changes, and innovate
continuously. Yet, balancing the need for speed with enterprise-grade
security, scalability, and compliance remains challenging. Low-code
platforms offer a potential answer, empowering enterprises to build
applications faster while involving non-developers in the process. But
with a vast array of platforms available, choosing the right one can
  be daunting.

This guide is tailored for large enterprises still
grappling with the decision of selecting the ideal low-code platform,
covering key factors that can help you make a strategic choice. As AI
has been playing more like a buzz word role these days many platforms
are also pitching AI based capabilities in their platform.

Therefore, to do a holistic comparison with respect
to an overall boost in the efficiency of enterprise application
development practice with the use of a low-code platform and choose
the ideal one for your organization, it is essential to plan for a
one-day workshop for a POC with all available platform owners or
partners rather than viewing just a demo.

Here are some tips that will help define the scope
of a POC for doing a fact check of the low-code platforms and
measurable KPIs in developing an enterprise web application.

How to define the functional scope for
    the POC?

To prepare the functional scope for the POC every
organization might need to define its requirements as per daily
operational challenges and Include features that take considerable
time & effort in the application development lifecycle.

Followings are some indicative pointers that covers
majority of tasks developers need to do in every application.

Include the requirement for development of relational Web
Forms to be used by department users e.g. Invoice creation form with
a feature to add multiple line items in the invoice.

Include the requirements of some related features as suggested
    below.

Input field validations.

One or two
        step approval workflows.

Email notification.

Keyword search response.

API development to add,
find, update and delete a record.

Dashboard (Basic
      Charts)

Audit trail of user activities

Department management by Admin user.

Department
wise user management by admin user.

Master data
management by department / admin user.

Localization
      capability.

Encryption of sensitive data in the
      database.

Include requirement that demands
creation of separate tables in the database.

Include
features that require role based access control.

Include
requirement of multiple departments using the same application in
    isolated manner.

Include requirement that ensures basic
features like updating and soft deletion of entries.

Include the feature for bulk uploading that ensures easy
    migration of existing data.

Include feature that requires
integration with external system. Make sure that access to working
APIs required for integration is provided to the developers at the
    time of POC.

Include few pages showing form data to be
made available as public page that does not require login. Let the
    UI decide by the participants.

Define the weightage of
each piece of requirement based on the complexity and time taken by
the developers in your current practice.

Define some
changes in the given requirement after completion of the original
scope e.g. add new fields in the form, change validation rules
  etc.

Decide total time to be allowed for doing the POC (In
  Hrs.)

Decide a venue for the POC where computers with
necessary access rights can be provided to the participants.

Legacy data for migration, at least 10000 records.

Measurable KPIs

Actual time taken in completion of the POC (In Hrs.)

Percentage of accomplishment in provided timeline based on the
    defined weightage.

Size of code files (HTML, CSS, JS,
JAVA, PHP etc.) written and deployed manually from outside the
  platform.

Time taken in implementing the change and
    deployment at the server.

Activities performed by the
    participant for making those changes.

Changes done from
    within the platform.

Changes done outside the platform and
    deployment process of these changes.

Number of technical
    people worked for the POC.

Value added features developed
in addition to the given scope of the POC.

Time taken in
uploading 10000 records using csv or excel file (for quick
    performance testing).

Do a quick load testing and VAPT to
    ensure security and performance compliance.

Number of
    critical Issues reported in VAPT.

Ability of developers to
change the UI using platform’s interface.

Ability of
developers to download, understand and make changes in the code if
platform is not supporting certain features. It is well understood
that no platform contains all capabilities to fulfill 100% of the
    requirement without customization.

Ability of developers
to easily understand and use the APIs developed in the POC from an
    external system or mobile app.

No. of days needed for new
developers to start using the platform and stack of tools that
developers need to learn before being productive.

Ability
of BI team to be able to easily understand the data and build
    intelligence dashboard.

TCO - Total cost of ownership over
next 3-5 years that includes hosting cost, user license cot, product
    license cost etc.

It might be looking extensive and too many stuffs
for the one-day workshop, but with the help of low-code platform
these activities are possible in just one day workshop.

Please feel free to learn more from our team of
experts and choose a right one for you.
